In 1980, Ken Grossman dared to dream of a better beer. From a small brewery in Chico, California, he created Pale Ale — the beer that sparked America's craft beer revolution. Since then, Sierra Nevada has stayed true to the principles that guided it from day one: the purest ingredients, uncompromising quality, and a commitment to community and the environment.
“When you pour your heart into your work, it shows up in every pint”
American Pale Ale
Founded
Ken Grossman brewed his first batch — 5 barrels of stout — from a hand-built brewhouse in Chico, California.
The Pale Ale Revolution
After ten test batches, Pale Ale was born — the beer that sparked America's craft beer revolution.
Coast to Coast
A second brewery opens in Mills River, North Carolina — later earning the first LEED Platinum certification for a U.S. production brewery.
Still 100% Family-Owned
Two breweries, 50 states, and over four decades later — Sierra Nevada remains independent and family-operated.
Whole-cone hops, two-row barley, proprietary yeast and pristine water. Since 1980, every ingredient is chosen for flavor — never for cost.
Guided by five values — Quality, Community, Sustainability, Integrity, People. From Chico, California to Israel, we invest in the communities we serve.
Over 10,750 solar panels, 99.8% waste diverted from landfill, and 28 acres of certified organic farmland. Spent grain goes to local cattle farms daily — nothing is wasted.

Pale Ale is a balanced beer with subtle bitterness and citrus and pine flavors. IPA (India Pale Ale) is hoppier with more pronounced bitterness. Hazy IPA, like Sierra Nevada's Hazy Little Thing, is less bitter and more fruity.
